How to Pick a Small Town Dentist

Dentist with PatientCongratulations! You and your family have started a new life in the country. Doesn’t that put a big smile on your face? And talking of smiles, where is your nearest dentist?

If you have modeved from London, you will be looking for a dentist in the home counties, such as Garden View Dental Care in Beaconsfield.

Creating relationships with healthcare professionals is worth investing time and research in, before we entrust these people with bits of ourselves that can be easily damaged and not so easily replaced, especially as we tend to stick with the same practice for years if we can.

If you feel daunted by the search for a new dentist, here’s a step-by-step guide to follow:

The Web Search

Search by the name of your nearest small towns with terms such as dentist, dental practice, dental clinic. You will probably get two or three practices, depending on the size of the town. Save them into a new folder marked ‘dentists’ in your bookmarks.

Check the Websites

Get a cup of tea and then spend a few minutes on each website. Things to check are:

  • The profile of each dentist. When did they qualify? What do they have postgraduate training in? Are they a registered specialist with the General Dental Council? Each dental professional at the practice will have a number under their name. You can use this to find out more about them on the GDC website;
  • What treatments do they offer? You should expect to see the usual general treatments, but they might also offer a range of cosmetic dentistry treatments, a variety of teeth straightening treatments, treatments for children, nervous patients, or older patients;
  • What other extras do they offer? Maybe they can also treat snoring, or they offer facial rejuvenation techniques such as Botox;
  • Is the practice nice to look at? Many websites have a section called ‘Practice Gallery’, which allows you to have a virtual tour of the premises.

The Face-To-Face

Ring up the dental practice and have a chat. Is the receptionist friendly? Can you come in for a look around and to meet the dentist? Drop in if you are passing by. Visit at least three clinics before making a commitment.
